Dampness and Mold Damage in Oak Hill Buildings

Dampness and Mold Damage in Buildings

At first, dampness may not seem like a very big problem. It isn't on its own, but the reason it's such a major concern for any commercial building is because it is a breeding ground for mold, other fungus, bacteria, and even insects. It's the direct result from excessive water from either external sources, such as floods or rain, or internal sources, such as leaky pipes or overflowing bathwater. It can also come from the air itself if the weather is humid enough. If that humidity is not properly controlled, it can cause excessive dampness. Dampness most often affects fixtures such as walls, rugs, ceiling tiles, or wooden flooring.

While things such as leaky roofs or burst pipes are often easy to spot, one other problem with dampness is that sometimes it can be hidden from view. Things like moist insulation from a roof leak or moisture slowly absorbing water in the structure's foundation due to it being built on a slope are common causes of dampness that aren't readily apparent. In many cases, it's not the dampness that causes the problems itself, but the things that dampness can attract.

Understanding Mold
Mold is a fungus that is attracted to and spreads on any damp or decaying organic substances, such as books, flooring, or anything else made with paper or wood. Mold is a very broad term and is actually comprised of a wide variety of different species, all with an assortment of colors, and all with their own proclivities related to environment, climate, and the time of the year when they're strongest.

Indoor mold damage in Oak Hill is often directly caused by excessive amounts of moisture. It spreads by releasing tiny spores that will reproduce given enough water, the right temperature, and enough nutrients to grow.

What is Toxic Mold?

Regardless of what type of mold damage is present, its presence is usually an indicator of moisture. The first step is to determine just where the moisture is coming from and to then fix the problem. Any materials that become damp from a leak should be dried entirely within no more than 24 to 48 hours. Mold that has already begun to affect hard surfaces can be cleaned with a mixture of 1 gallon of water and a cup of bleach, just make sure not to ever mix in any other household cleaners or ammonia. If it's under the carpet or in the walls, the only sure method of dealing with mold damage is complete removal and replacement.

Is There a Way to Test for the Type of Mold?
While it is possible to determine just what species of mold you have, doing so can be very costly. Luckily, it's unnecessary to do so, as the CDC recommends mold should be eliminated as soon as it's detected, regardless of type.
