Research shows that often times most injuries from household fires are very preventable; but we do not have the proper plans in place.
Throughout childhood, we all practiced fire drills. While it may have only served as a way to get out of class- it could have been one of the most important things we learned in our formative years. Last year alone 3,645 people died due to a fire, the majority of which were preventable.
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and NFPA, the best way to stay safe during a fire is to have a home fire escape plan; similar to the one that we all practiced in school.
Depending upon who you ask, there are several keys to remember in creating such a plan; however, we have compiled the list of the must haves.
- Sketch a map of you home.
- Identify two ways out of every room.
- Ensure all smoke alarms are properly working.
- Establish an outside meeting place for you and your children.
- Learn the number to the local fire department.
- PRACTICE the plan.
By remembering these seven steps, you could prevent disaster within your home!
